Met Office extends yellow weather warning for Greater Manchester as flood alerts in place

The Met Office has extended a yellow weather warning for heavy rain for parts of Greater Manchester.

The alert was initially put in place between midnight today (Thursday) until 11.59pm. Forecasters have now extended the warning to last until 7am tomorrow.

It covers much of our region, including Tameside, Stockport and Rochdale. The warning also covers parts of Yorkshire, Cumbria and Scotland.

The Met Office warning states that the heavy rain could' lead to flooding and disruption in a few places'. 'A few' homes and business are expected to be affected by flooding.

Forecasters also predict disruption on some roads and on public transport throughout today and into the morning due to the downpours. The Environment Agency also issued two official flood alerts in our region.

The warning covers parts of Greater Manchester (The Met Office)

The first alert covers the Middle River Mersey catchment including areas near Bramhall, Stockport, Sale, Altrincham and Urmston. 'Low lying land' is expected to be affected by the heavy rainfall with areas around Micker, Cringle, Sinderland and Poynton Brooks likely to be worst hit.

Areas in Stretford, Gatley, Cheadle Hulme and Cheadle may also flood, according to the Environment Agency. The second alert covers the River Mersey Uplands catchment including Hyde, Ashton-under-Lyne, Denton, Stalybridge and Glossop.

Areas around the Rivers Goyt, Tame, Sett and Etherow are likely to be the worst hit. Anyone who needs help with flooding can call Floodline on 0345 988 1188 or text 0345 602 6340.
