Met Office extend 'danger to life' amber warning to 72 hours due to extreme heat expected

The Met Office has extended its heat warning a further 24 hours, which will affect not just Nottinghamshire but most of England and Wales. The weather warning will now remain in place from Sunday, July 17 until Tuesday, July 19.

An amber warning has been issued for the three days due to an expected hot spell of extreme heat, which is likely to develop from Sunday and peak early next week. This may lead to widespread impacts on people and infrastructure.

Temperatures could be in excess of 35 degrees in the southeast, and around 32 degrees within the warning area. Due to this hot weather, adverse health affects are likely to be experienced population-wide, not just by those most vulnerable to the heat, and this could lead to potential serious illness or danger to life.

The weather may also lead to substantial changes in working practices, and delays on roads and road closures are also possible. Delays and cancellations to rail and air travel are also possible, with potential for significant welfare issues for those who experience even moderate delays.

The Met Office have also warned that due to the heat wave more people are likely to visit coastal areas, lakes and rivers. This can lead to increased risk of water safety incidents.

The latest evidence from the office suggests the hot weather peaking on Monday or Tuesday, and then it is likely to decline after this. Some exceptionally high temperatures are possible both day and night.
