Met Office explains how Hurricane Lorenzo will affect Liverpool after some 'exaggerated' forecasts

The remains of Hurricane Lorenzo are set to hit the UK on Thursday, bringing wind and heavy rain to Liverpool.

Some reports suggest the storms effects could be catastrophic, but the Met Office say the claims have been exaggerated.

Western Ireland will actually be hit with some force, but by the time the weather system progresses to mainland UK it won't be as strong.

A Met Office spokesperson spoke to the ECHO about what weather Liverpool and Merseyside can expect to face from Thursday onwards.

He said: "The weather system arrives on late Thursday afternoon, after a chilly and frosty start, cloud gathers through the afternoon and winds pick up.

"Rain will also come in in the early evening, around the rush hour at 5-7pm, strong winds of up to 35mph will be seen around the coasts, with gusts of 15-20mph expected inland.

"The rain pushes through overnight, but Friday will be a dreary old day really, the wind will drop off and there will be a slow improvement as the day goes on.

"Temperatures will differ between Thursday and Friday with highs of 13C on Thursday, but highs of 18C on Friday as the tropical air pushes through making it feel quite muggy.

"Looking forward to the weekend Saturday will start dry but then locally heavy rain will sweep in, as another weather system comes through the area, making it a wet Autumn weekend."
