Met Office explains 'fireballs' seen in the sky this weekend

Weather experts have explained a strange phenomenon which looked like fireballs in the sky over the UK this weekend.

People thought the strange 'flaming' streaks in the sky could be comets, solar flares or aliens.

Freelance photographer Ray Worsnop and Jaz Parker Jones took pictures of the strange sight off the coast, reports the Daily Post.

But weather experts have said while they look spectacular, the images are nothing unusual.

A Met Office spokesman said: "As beautiful as the photos are, fortunately, the trails are only those of an aeroplane.

"Aeroplane contrails are long thin lines of cloud, usually seen behind an aircraft.

"This seems to be what has happened here, but due to the cloud line and the format of which the sun is setting, it has managed to catch this meteoroid effect which is very impressive."

Contrails, form when water vapour condenses around emissions from an airplane and freezes to form cloud.

That, combined with the orange light of a clear and picturesque sunset led to the strange sight,
