Met Office changes thunderstorm warning for Merseyside

The Met Office has made a change to the thunderstorm warning that starts on Merseyside tomorrow.

The weather organisation had initially put a three day yellow weather warning for thunderstorms in place, covering Wednesday to Friday.

But following a change in the forecast the Met Office has cut the warning, so it only now covers from 6pm on Wednesday to midnight on Thursday.

It also no longer covers Liverpool city centre, but it does cover the east of Merseyside.

The warning said: "Some places are likely to see thunderstorms later Wednesday through to Friday with the potential for travel disruption and flooding.

"There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail and strong winds.

"Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services.

"Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures.

"There is a small chance that some communities become cut off by flooded roads.

"There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost."

Despite the warning Liverpool is currently not forecast to see storms tomorrow or Thursday, but they could still occur.

Wednesday is set to be a dry but cloudy day, with temperatures reaching the low twenties.

Thursday is forecast to be a similar day to Wednesday, but there is the chance that more sunny spells will break through.

The Met Office forecast for the North West said: "Wednesday will be dry and sunny to start, but some cloud and drizzle will drift in from the west through the afternoon. A light breeze.

"Thursday should be a dry day overall, but it will be rather cloudy. The odd shower cannot be totally ruled out.

"Friday will be a similar day, but there will be more in the way of sunshine. Any showers are likely to be in the evening.

"On Saturday, there will be the odd shower to start, but the cloud should gradually break up and it will turn dry with sunshine."
