He has the UK forecast for the week and says: "We are very much in the blue as we start a new working week, and that does mean there is going to be frost, but temperatures will rally going into Tuesday.
"By Wednesday, temperatures are coming down again and on Thursday there will be plenty of sunshine. There will be some wintry showers in northern Scotland, a few in the east and west but most places dry and sunny. It is colder and more of a wind chill.
"There is some uncertainty towards the end of the week and into the weekend, but we could see low pressure coming down bringing wetter and windier weather. We may see some snow to lower levels, especially in Scotland. It will be just a few degrees about freezing, but not usual for the time of year."
The long range forecast
The Met Office long range forecast for the UK goes as far as Monday, December 20, and is forecasting cold spells.
For the end of this week up to Sunday, December 5, it says: " High pressure is likely to sit to the south or southwest of the UK, so rain and showers are more likely in the north, these could be wintry on high ground and perhaps at lower levels at times. Likely drier at times in the south and rather cold at times, with overnight frost likely.
For the forecast from Monday, December 6 to Monday, December 20, it says: " A generally northwesterly airflow looks set to continue for much of this period, with the most changeable conditions likely to be in the north of the UK.
"Showers or longer spells of rain and possibly strong winds are likely across the north, become increasingly likely further north, these interspersed with periods of more settled weather. In the south high pressure is likely to remain close by, giving a good deal of settled and dry weather.
"Temperatures will be varied overall with longer mild spells being punctuated by shorter colder spells, with some wintry weather also possible with a risk of snow and ice in the north. During any clear, calm spells, overnight frost and fog are likely."
