Met Gala 2019: From 'Camp' theme to Harry Styles hosting, here is everything you need to know

The Met Gala is the most anticipated event in the fashion calendar.

Each year the annual event, which started in 1948, raises funds for the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and is packed with stars, style and splendour.

Under the watchful eye of US Vogue editor Anna Wintour, the 2019 gala will, once again, see celebrities - dressed to impress - walk up the steps of the historic New York landmark in less than one month.

For everything we know so far about the celeb-filled evening, keep reading...

Who are the celebrity co-hosts?

In 2018, The Met Gala was hosted by Rihanna, Amal Clooney and Donatella Versace - a hard trio to beat. However, next year's recently announced line-up has undoubtedly matched it.

Harry Styles will act as co-chair - a rather surprising revelation considering it will be his first time at the prestigious event.

He will be in good hands, however, as he will have the support of seasoned pro Lady Gaga, as well as tennis extraordinaire, Serena Williams.

They will, of course, be joined by US Vogue editor, Anna Wintour - who has famously hosted the event since 1995 - and Gucci's creative director, Alessandro Michele (more on him later).

What is 2019's theme?

In a departure from 2018's religious theme, "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination,", The Met's 2019 exhibition, which also acts as the dress code for the gala, has been entitled "Camp: Notes on Fashion".

The theme was inspired by Susan Sontag's 1964 essay "Notes on Camp", with her musings exploring the many different meanings of the word 'camp'. As an extract explains, it entails: “love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration . . . style at the expense of content . . . the triumph of the epicene style.”

In short, the theme is designed to celebrate all things camp, which means the 2019 Met Gala is sure to be filled with unmissable amounts of creativity, colour and sparkle.

Who is the stylish sponsor?

Given its theme, it is no surprise that sponsoring the event will be the ever stylish brand, Gucci. Indeed, we predict the 2019 Met Gala might possibly be the most flamboyant and theatrical to date.

The Italian label is no stranger to outlandish designs and is currently spearheaded by Alessandro Michele (hence why he is set to co-host). Speaking to Vogue, Michele said that Sontag's essay: “perfectly expresses what camp truly means to me: the unique ability of combining high art and pop culture.”

Gucci's involvement also ties in nicely with that of Harry Styles'; the singer is currently a face of the brand and has starred in numerous campaigns for the label, often alongside a few piglets and lambs.

Will Harry walk down the red carpet accompanied by his farmyard friends? Only time will tell.

When will it take place?

The Met Gala always takes place on the first Monday of May, meaning 2019's date will be May 6. Get it in your calendars pronto, people.

Following the star-studded gala, the exhibition will then run from May 9 - September 9, 2019.
