If this year’s Met Gala was about channelling your inner-most camp and fabulous self, Cara Delevingne succeeded with aplomb.
On Monday evening, the British model arrived at the annual fashion juggernaut, hosted at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, wearing a sheer rainbow-striped playsuit from Dior’s haute couture spring/summer 2019 collection.
Because Delevingne is no sartorial wallflower – and because this is the Met Gala – she accessorised her multi-coloured ensemble with matching platform heels, a Swarovski crystal cane and a zany headpiece containing bananas, eyeballs and wind-up teeth. There was even a fried egg charm dangling from one side.
But it’s the model’s rainbow aesthetic that has garnered the most praise on social media, with many fans interpreting it as a nod to the LGBT+ community.
“Cara Delevingne ended homophobia tonight,” teased one person in a tweet that has since been liked more than 1,200 times.
“No security at Pride, just Cara Delevingne and her rainbow cane!” enthused another.

Speaking to American Vogue about her look on the red carpet, Delevingne explained that she defines the Met Gala’s camp theme as “an expression of your most outrageous” self.
When asked by the publication's interviewer if this ensemble was in fact her “most outrageous”, the 26-year-old replied, “nearly, I’d say it’s about five per cent”.
Delevingne, who recently described herself as “sexually fluid”, is renowned for her outlandish Met Gala looks, having previously dressed as a sci-fi cyborg (2017) and a church confession box (2018).
