The Metropolitan Police have imposed restrictions on protests planned in central London this weekend, using powers under the Public Order Act to prevent serious disruption.
A demonstration organised by a number of groups under the banner of the Palestine Coalition is set to take place on Saturday afternoon. Protesters are due to gather in Russell Square from midday before marching to Whitehall via Aldwych and the Strand, where the event will end with a rally and speeches.
A static counter-protest organised by a group known as ‘Stop the Hate’ will take place at the junction of the Strand and Waterloo Bridge.
Officers have set out a series of conditions for the Palestine Coalition protest. Those taking part must remain in a designated area of Russell Square until the march begins, and must stay on the agreed route to Whitehall. Once at the end point, demonstrators must remain within a marked area for the assembly, which must end by 5.30pm. The stage for speeches must be positioned within a separate zone outlined by police.
The Met said discussions are ongoing over what conditions will be imposed on the Stop the Hate protest, and further updates will be issued once confirmed.
Police added that any additional restrictions on other protest activity in the capital this weekend will also be announced in due course.
