Met Eireann Weather: 15 rescued by gardai after trying to drive through 'impassible' snowy road

Gardai have sent a warning to motorists not to go near the Sally Gap and to listen to them when they say it's impassible.

So far the roads policing unit has had to rescue 15 people including a coach as the snowy conditions have made it too treacherous to drive on.

The popular Co Wicklow spot regularly has regularly had issues with motorists trying to brave it when the weather is too bad.

Gardai said: "Believe us when we say Sally Gap is impassable. Wicklow RPU to the rescue for a family and a tri-axle coach.

"Road has a 7.5 tonne limit. 15 passengers had to be rescued. Remember the Sally Gap is Impassable."

And yesterday, the Dublin & Wicklow Mountain Rescue Team along with the Glen of Imaal Mountain Rescue Team were called on to help several on upland roads in Wicklow amid the worsening wintry weather.

The incidents occurred on the R759 and R115 that cross the Sally Gap and the L2083 between Laragh and Glenmalure.

They said in a statement last night: "The Sally Gap is impassable due to icy road conditions. People are being advised to stay away from the area.

"Gardaí, along with Dublin & Wicklow Mountain Rescue Teams and Glen of Imaal Mountain Rescue Team have evacuated stranded motorists this evening, bringing them to safety in mountain rescue 4x4 vehicles.

"Conditions in the area are extremely hazardous, with widespread sheet ice and almost no snow on the ground."

AA Roadwatch has said that both roads through the Sally Gap remain closed this evening due to "treacherous conditions".

Met Eireann say the cooler spells will continue through the week - and have warned that wintry conditions will be especially prevalent on high ground.

They said: "Tonight, further showers in the West and North, some wintry, especially on high ground. Mainly dry elsewhere. Cold with a widespread frost, icy patches and some freezing fog patches. Lowest temperatures of 0 to minus 3 degrees as winds fall light.

"Tomorrow will be a mainly dry day with sunny spells and temperatures of between 3 and 7 degrees at best with light winds. The odd shower may still affect some Atlantic coastal parts, and fog may linger in places."
