Met Eireann warns of 'severe frost' as freezing snap hits before positive change

Ireland is braced for another cold snap over the next 24 hours with temperatures set to plummet to as low as minus 8C this evening.

Freezing conditions are set to sweep across the country as the bitter cold snap continues this week.

And Met Eireann is warning a 'severe frost' will hit this evening.

Today is set to start out with widespread frost and ice hitting part of the country and some wintry showers set to arrive.

Connacht, Ulster and Leinster is expected to bear the brunt of the wintry falls with a risk of some snow further north.

But the severe frost will creep in once it gets dark.

Tonight will be "extremely cold tonight with widespread frost and ice" but it will be dry, calm and clear in many areas, however some wintry showers will affect the east of Leinster.

Temperatures will plummet to between -2 and -8 degrees Celsius, with fog forming in some areas.

However the outlook for the weekend looks much more positive with a return to more near normal temperature but a forecaster has warned it will become more unsettled.

A forecaster said: "Patchy drizzle will affect parts of the north and west, but otherwise it will be dry with broken cloud. Minimum temperatures -3 to +2 degrees Celsius, coldest under clearest skies where frost and possible ice will set in. Some mist and fog patches too in just light westerly breezes.

"On Sunday many areas will be dry with a mix of cloud and some sunny spells, and just light southwesterly breezes. However, patchy drizzle will cotinine to affect northern and western counties.

"Maximum temperatures of 5 to 8 degrees Celsius, best values closer to the Atlantic.

"Rather cloudy overnight with further patchy drizzle across the west and north, whilst holding mostly dry elsewhere. Some frost is possible.

"Minimum temperatures of 1 to 5 degrees Celsius, in moderate southwest breezes."
