Met Eireann warn thunderstorms and hail to lash parts of the country today

The western half of the country is to be lashed with hail and thunderstorms today.

Met Eireann are forecasting poor conditions to make it a miserable day in many parts of Ireland with thunder and lightning adding to the woes.

It will also be a chilly one with temperatures not surpassing 10C in most of the country.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Cool and blustery this afternoon with sunny spells and scattered showers. The showers will be most frequent over the western half of the country, some will be heavy, with a risk of hail and isolated thunderstorms. Afternoon highs will range 5 to 9 degrees in fresh and gusty southwest winds.

"Further showers of rain or hail tonight, again most frequent over the western half of the country, though a few will spread eastwards from time to time. Clear spells occurring also, especially in the southeast where it will be coolest. Lows of 3 to 6 degrees in moderate to fresh and gusty southwest winds."

This is ahead of much colder conditions on Christmas week - with Met Eireann predicting sleet in many parts of Ireland on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are both looking like they will be very cold but snow isn't being forecast just yet.
