Met Eireann warn of thunderstorms, 'severe downpours' and hail as Status Yellow warning issued for eight counties

Thunderstorms and "severe downpours" are to lash parts of the country over night as Met Eireann issued an updated weather warning.

The national forecaster has placed eight counties under a Status Yellow Thunder alert from 9pm on Tuesday night, June 16, until 6am on Wednesday morning, June 17.

The counties affected are: Dublin, Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Wexford, Wicklow and Waterford.

The fresh alert replaces an earlier one issued for 18 counties.

A forecaster said: "Thunderstorms in places tonight with severe downpours, hail and local flooding."

Eastern and northeastern counties will experience the worst of the weather with further showers and localised thunderstorms but there will be a lot of dry weather elsewhere.

It will turn misty later with some fog patches with minimum temperatures of 10C to 13C in light, variable winds.

Meanwhile, in Northern Ireland, a similar  thunderstorm warning will be in place for Antrim, Armagh, Down, Tyrone and Derry in Northern Ireland.

It will remain in place until 6am tomorrow morning.

The UK Met Office said: "A few places may see thunderstorms causing flooding and disruption."
