Met Eireann warn horrible weather set to batter Ireland with chance of snow and warnings

Met Eireann has warned of travel disruption and coastal flooding as unusual weather is set to hit Ireland early next week.

Wet and windy conditions are expected to batter the country as the forecaster says warnings will likely be issued as the week continues.

In a statement, Met Eireann said: "A spell of wet and very windy weather is expected to impact Ireland on Tuesday 7th and Wednesday the 8th December, with potential impacts including travel disruption and coastal flooding."

As temperatures drop, Ireland could see its first snowfall this season as wintery conditions are predicted early next week.

Met Eireann said: "There is also the potential for wintry precipitation on Tuesday night and Wednesday which may lead to further travel disruptions."

This weekend will also see poor conditions, with Met Eireann issuing a status yellow wind warning for Saturday morning.

West to northwest winds will reach gale force eight on Irish coastal waters from Strangford Lough to Carlingford Lough to Howth Head and on the Irish Sea north of Anglesey.

Conditions will be cold, blustery and showery throughout the day, with showers most frequent near northern and western coasts.

There may be snow on high ground as some heavy showers with the potential for hail, sleet and isolated thunderstorms predicted.

Daytime temperatures will reach just 4 to 7 degrees in moderate to fresh west to northwest winds.

Sunday will be a largely dry and bright day with long spells of sunshine and just isolated light showers along western and northwestern coasts.

Highest temperatures will range between 6 to 9 degrees in a light to moderate west to northwest breeze, backing southwest later.

Sunday night will bring more rain and sleet, with temperatures plunging to below freezing with lowest temperatures of -2 to +3 degrees.

It will be coldest in the northeast, as the rain will bring milder conditions overnight, with moderate to fresh southerly winds veering westerly later.
