Met Eireann update on 24-hour weather warning with risk of flooding and snow on the way

Ireland is set to be battered by harsh winds and wintry showers in the coming days with lots of rain expected.

Met Eireann has warned of the possibility of some localised flooding with the arrival of some very heavy rainfall hitting parts of the country.

And the National forecaster has said that hail, sleet and some snow will also hit a number of areas.

Currently there is a Status Yellow rainfall warning in place for Connacht, Longford, Louth, Westmeath, Meath, Cavan and Monaghan.

The warning took effect at 9pm on Monday and is in place until 9pm today.

Meanwhile Met Eireann has said today will start off wet and breezy this morning with rain over the northern half of the country.

And forecasters have warned the showers will be "heavy at times with a risk of localised flooding throughout the day."

They added: "Further rain and drizzle will move in this morning over the southern half of the country, becoming intermittent during the afternoon.

"Highest afternoon temperatures in Ulster of just 3 to 6 degrees, but milder elsewhere, with 8 to 11 degrees."

"Outbreaks of rain will continue across much of the country tonight but a clearance from the northwest to well scattered showers will gradually extend over much of Ulster and Connacht by dawn.

"Lowest temperatures of -2 to +2 degrees over the northern half of the country, but ranging from 2 to 6 degrees further south."

Unfortunately the bad weather will continue into the week but there will be some positive signs emerging that we could see some sunny spells.

But there will be some hail, sleet and even snow in some areas.

A forecaster added: "Tomorrow, the rain will gradually become confined to the east and southeast through the morning."

"Good sunny spells developing elsewhere with scattered showers along with a risk of hail. Remaining cloudy though the day along eastern counties as rain lingers, with some falls of sleet with snow on high ground before clearing."
