Met Eireann update forecast as 'nasty' weather front just hours away from Ireland

Ireland is braced for stormy weather on Tuesday night with a low-pressure system moving in across the country.

Forecasters expect the system to arrive on Tuesday evening with high winds, heavy rain and the potential for flooding.

Carlow Weather's Alan O'Reilly described the oncoming system as "nasty" with weather warnings from Met Eireann potentially coming in the next 24 hours.

Met Eireann this morning updated their forecast and are predicting the weather front to hammer most areas on Tuesday.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Tuesday will be generally dry with good sunny spells, the best of which will be in the north and east. Cloudier with frequent blustery showers in southern and western counties, a few of which will move further inland.

"Highest temperatures of 6 to 10 degrees in moderate to fresh southerly winds. Later in the afternoon, cloud will push up from the south ahead of heavy rain, accompanied by strengthening winds.

"Tuesday night: A wet and windy night. A low pressure system will move up from the south over the country bringing strong and gusty winds with gales on southern and eastern coasts along with heavy rainfall throughout the country bringing a risk of coastal and surface flooding.

"Lowest temperatures of 3 to 7 degrees will occur early in the night."

Wednesday will begin wet and windy as well but the stormy weather is not expected to linger around for too long.

The Met Eireann forecaster said: "Wet and windy to begin on Wednesday. Strong and gusty mainly southerly winds will veer southwesterly during the afternoon and gradually ease.

"The rain will clear northeastwards with scattered showers feeding in from the Atlantic. Highest temperatures of 8 to 11 degrees.

"Dry overnight for most but scattered showers will continue to feed in from the Atlantic, mainly affecting western and northwestern areas. Lowest temperatures of 3 to 6 degrees will occur towards dawn. Some mist and fog patches will develop in light to moderate south to southwest breezes."
