Met Eireann summer weather report shows Dublin Airport had the least dull days

The summer weather report from Met Eireann for 2021 has been published and has shown that Dublin Airport had the fewest dull days in the country.

Summer 2021 was warm everywhere and relatively dry especially in the east of the country.

Heatwaves were recorded through the summer with June being provisionally the third driest on record.

While the first two weeks of July was dominated by a low-pressure system that brought thundery downpours.

The final two weeks saw a high-pressure system push away the jet stream with warm southerly air leading to a heatwave across the country.

The jet stream returned in August with a low-pressure system bringing wet and windy weather for the country.

If looking for a location with the driest and least dull days throughout the summer, then Dublin and the Airport is the place to go.

Nearly all rainfall was below the average for the time of year.

Phoenix Park had the least number of rain days with 30 throughout the summer.

Dublin Airport had the fewest 'wet days' during the summer with just 19 days. A 'wet day' is a day where at least there's at least 1mm of rainfall.

Two locations in Dublin also had 'dry spells' in June. Dublin Airport and Phoenix Park both experienced dry spells for between 26 and 19 days, respectively.

In July, Phoenix Park suffered another dry spell this time lasting between July 5 and 26 and lasted for 15 days.

A dry spell is a period of 15 or more consecutive days to none of which is credited 1.0 mm or more of precipitation.

Both the Phoenix Park and Dublin Airport had "absolute droughts" between May 29 and June 13 lasting for 16 days. An "absolute drought" is a period of 15 or more consecutive days to none of which is credited 0.2 mm or more of precipitation.

In total, just nine days at Dublin Airport were recorded as being in the dull category. Dublin Airport was tied with Johnstown Castle in Co Wexford.

This applies to days that have just 0.5 hours or less of sunshine in a single day.
