Met Eireann stays cool on prospects of three month heatwave despite UK weather experts predicting scorcher

Met Eireann has stayed cool on the prospects of a three-month long heatwave in Ireland after UK weather experts predicted a scorching 28C.

The British weather forecasters have said it is 10 times more likely that Britain will enjoy a hot “Spanish plume” from May until July.

But Met Eireann’s Joanna Donnelly said: “Nobody can predict a heatwave in July. What they (weather expert) is looking at is seasonable trends based on observations of the stratosphere.

Irish weather forecast: Met Eireann predicts more heavy rain after a weekend of stormy weather

“It's looking at probabilities of what could happen, but you can't say the second of June will be a fine and sunny day - that's nonsense.”

She added that they can only predict the weather five days in advance but it also depends on what the situation is at the time of the forecast, the Irish Independent reports.

Temperatures are set to hit 16C on Monday before going down for the rest of the week.

Monday will be mostly dry with scattered outbreaks of rain.

It’ll be mild with temperatures ranging between 13C to 16C, coolest in the east and warmest in the midlands and west.

Monday night will see rain arriving in the west and spreading across the country overnight.

Temperatures will be 9C to 10C.

A rainy start is expected on Tuesday which will clear away with sunshine in the west.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: “However, in the east outbreaks of rain will continue for much of the day. Highest temperatures of 11C to 13C.

“It will become largely dry on Tuesday night with clear spells and it will turn quite cold with lowest temperatures of 3C to 6C in light breezes.”

Wednesday will see some heavy showers after a generally bright and dry start.

“Highest temperatures of 12C or 13C, in light variable breezes. The showers will become isolated on Wednesday night with lowest temperatures of 5C or 6C.”
