Met Eireann share Ireland's warmest, windiest and wettest spots in 2019

Ireland's warmest, windiest and wettest spots in 2019 were unveiled by Met Eireann on Monday.

In their annual report, the weather chiefs revealed that the hottest temperature of the year occurred at Shannon Airport on June 27, when the mercury climbed to a scorching 28.4C.

And the highest rainfall was recorded at Newport in Co Mayo, with 1796.6mm falling over the course of the year.

Johnstown Castle in Wexford saw a gorgeous 1607.7 hours of sun over the course of the year, while the lowest was 1029.1 hours at Knock Airport in Mayo.

Across the country, more rain fell than ever.

The biggest increases were in Athenry in Galway, Dublin Airport and Claremorris in Mayo that all see more than 15 per cent more rain than average.

Dublin’s Phoenix Park saw the biggest rise in temperature, with a 0.7C climb on the average from the previous year.

A spokesman said: “The majority of annual rainfall totals were above their Long-Term Average (LTA).

“Percentage of annual rainfall values ranged from 95 per cent (rainfall total of 1132.9 mm) at Sherkin Island, Co. Cork to 120 per cent (rainfall total of 1426.8 mm) at Athenry, Co. Galway.

“Annual rainfall totals ranged from 807.6mm in Dublin to 1796.6 mm at Newport, Co. Mayo.

“The highest daily rainfall total was 56.2 mm at Fermoy, Co Cork on October 14.

And when it came to temperature, most stations recorded average air temperatures above their Long-Term Average (LTA).

“Deviations from mean air temperature for the year ranged from -0.1C at Dublin Airport, Markree, Co. Sligo and Athenry, Co Galway to 0.7C at Dublin (Phoenix Park).

“Sunshine totals were variable, sunniest in the Southeast.

“Percentage of annual sunshine values ranged from 86 per cent at Knock Airport, Co. Mayo to 113 per cent at Johnstown Castle while the highest number of daily sunshine hours recorded was 15.7 hours at Belmullet, Co. Mayo on July 14.

“Storm force winds were reported during several storms in the Southwest, West and Northwest and there were numerous days with gales and strong gales with storm force winds on nine days while the number of days with strong gales ranged from zero at most stations to 20 days at Mace Head, Co. Galway.”
