Met Eireann share grim forecast update as storm conditions head towards Ireland

Gale force winds are expected later this week as stormy conditions head towards Ireland.

The miserable weather of recent days looks set to continue with further thunderstorms possible on Tuesday.

While gales and heavy rain are expected in places on Thursday as an unsettled spell of weather continues.

Tonight will see some showers, particularly in the south, before a further risk of thunderstorms tomorrow, particularly in Leinster.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Dry in many areas tonight with long clear spells. Scattered showers will spread from the west overnight, mainly affecting Munster while elsewhere will hold largely dry. Lowest temperatures of 2 to 6 degrees, dropping lower locally, in a light southerly or variable breeze.

"Tomorrow morning will be dry with sunny spells for most but scattered showers will affect the south and west. Further scattered showers will develop through the afternoon, heaviest in Leinster with the risk of thunderstorms. Becoming mainly dry in the west for a time in the afternoon. Highest temperatures of 11 to 15 degrees in a light to moderate westerly breeze.

"A mix of dry clear spells and isolated showers on Tuesday night. Rain and drizzle may push into the west and northwest overnight. Lowest temperatures of 3 to 7 degrees with light westerly winds."

And the rest of the week looks set to be a washout, as wet and windy weather is set to spread across the country on Wednesday night and into Thursday, with gales along the coast.

While there will be more heavy and possibly thundery showers on Friday.

A forecaster added: "Outbreaks of rain or drizzle over the northern half of the country for much of Wednesday. Scattered showers early in the day further south, becoming largely dry during the afternoon and evening with sunny spells developing. Highest temperatures of 13 to 16 degrees in light or moderate westerly winds.

"A mild windy night with rain spreading from the southwest to most areas by morning. Southerly winds strengthening as the rain arrives, increasing strong to near gale in coastal parts of the south and west. Lows of 6 to 9 degrees

"A wet and windy day on Thursday. Rain extends to all areas on Thursday morning accompanied by strong southerly winds. The rain will be persistent and heavy in places, especially in the west and north. Remaining wet and windy for much of the day, with strong southerly winds veering westerly later, with gales on coasts. Highs of 12 to 14 degrees.

"A cool, blustery day on Friday with frequent showers. The showers heavy or possibly thundery at times. Highs of 12 or 13 degrees in fresh to strong northwesterly winds."
