A Status Yellow weather warning has been issued by Met Eireann as Ireland is set to be hit with heavy showers and flooding.

The national forecaster said thunderstorms will bring "hazardous driving conditions".

The warning for rain and thunderstorms is in place from 12 noon today until 5 am tomorrow.

The alert reads: "Thunderstorms and heavy showers will develop today over the western half of the country, moving eastwards this evening where they will continue tonight. Localised downpours will lead to spot flooding and hazardous driving conditions."

This morning will see some bright or sunny spells but cloud will thicken from the west during the day.

"Showery" rain is expected to develop with thundery bursts which may lead to spot flooding. Temperatures will be from 20C to 23C.

Tonight will see more showers and localised thunderstorms with a risk of spot flooding and temperatures of 11C to 14C.

More showery rain is expected tomorrow with just occasional bright spells and temperatures will range between 17C to 21C.
