Met Eireann's warning for one county as horrendous weather leads to major damage

Met Eireann is warning people to heed the advice of local authorities in Cork after horrendous weather hit.

The Rebel County, which remains under two status yellow warnings, was bashed with heavy winds and torrential rain on Monday night.

Many have woken up to see their street flooded extensively while roads across the county are impassable.

Met Eireann tweeted this morning: "Please take care if travelling in Cork city and county today. Follow the guidance and advice from Cork County and City Council."

And the Council have asked people to avoid low lying areas of the county this morning due to the major flooding.

A spokesperson said: "Cork City Council asks road users to please avoid low lying areas of Cork City Centre until 11am this morning, due to serious flooding.

"Cork City Council Operations crews, @CorkCityFire & @cc_civildefence are on site to assist as serious flooding has occurred."

The weather isn't anticipated to improve all that much either, with more wind and rain on the way.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Today will be a wet and windy day. Fresh to strong and gusty southerly winds will be strongest through the morning in coastal counties.

"Showers or longer spells of rain will spread across the province in the early morning bringing heavy thundery downpours and a continued risk of localised flooding. Showers will become more isolated and winds will gradually ease through the afternoon and evening hours. Highest temperatures of 12 to 14 degrees.

"Drier conditions will develop in many areas tonight although showery outbreaks of rain will continue in parts of the west.

"Lowest temperatures of 5 to 10 degrees, coolest where some clear spells develop in southeastern parts. Moderate to fresh southwesterly winds easing light to moderate and variable in direction."
