Met Eireann's updated weather forecast ahead of awful 48 hours with immediate warning for eight counties

Met Eireann are forecasting an awful weekend of heavy rain and high winds with one warning already for eight counties.

The national forecaster is expecting awful conditions for most of the country on Saturday with a status yellow wind warning in effect from midday to 6pm.

Waterford, Wexford, Kilkenny, Carlow, Wicklow, Dublin, Meath and Louth are all under the six-hour warning.

The alert reads: "Through Saturday afternoon and early evening, southerly winds will reach mean speeds of 50 to 65 km/hr with gusts of up to 100 km/hr."

But even those areas not warned should expect some wet and windy conditions, a Met Eireann forecaster said: "Becoming very windy today with rain developing in the south and southeast early this morning.

"Rain, heavy or thundery at times will spread to all areas by early afternoon, as southeast winds increase strong to near gale force and gusty, with gales or strong gales at times on coasts. The rain will clear northeastwards in the evening as winds veer southwesterly and gradually ease. Highest temperatures of 9 to 11 degrees.

"Clear spells and scattered blustery showers mostly in the west of the country tonight. Lows of 4 to 7 degrees, in fresh and gusty southerly winds."

And it isn't looking much improved on Sunday with more heavy rain and high winds - although there is no warnings just yet.

The forecaster added: " Bright spells and mostly dry in the east to start with scattered showers in the west extending to all areas during the afternoon. Highs of 8 to 11 degrees in a moderate to fresh southwesterly breezes."

And next week will be much the same, the forecast continues: "After a brief respite it will become very wet and windy again on Monday night and Tuesday. There will be a growing flood risk as rain will likely persist in parts of the south and east through Wednesday also. Current indications are that more settled conditions will build over the country later in the week."
