Met Eireann's updated forecast as atrocious conditions to hit one part of Ireland amid separate weather warnings

Most of Ireland is set for brutal weather this evening and tomorrow, with torrential rain to hit amid two separate weather warnings.

Met Eireann has put in place two status yellows – one for wind, one for rain – as fears grow that flooding is possible tonight in many parts of the country.

The wind warning, which comes into force at 9pm today, covers 13 counties and could see winds of up to 110km/h on exposed coasts.

All of Munster will be battered by pacy gusts tonight – as will Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford, Donegal, Galway, Mayo and Sligo.

Separately, the 24-hour rain warning – which cautions the public about heavy rain and possible surface flooding – covers 14 counties: all of Munster and Connacht, as well as Carlow, Kilkenny and Wexford.

The wind warning reads: "Southerly winds will reach mean wind speeds of 50 to 65km/h, with gusts of 90 to 110km/h, possibly higher on exposed coasts.

"Where winds are onshore there is a risk of coastal flooding."

And the rain alert, in place from midnight on Monday until the same time on Tuesday, warns of "heavy rain on Monday night and Tuesday coupled with strong southerly winds.

"Some river and localised surface flooding possible.

"Rainfall totals of 30 to 50mm, higher in mountainous regions."

While neither warning is countrywide, Ireland's other counties aren't going to escape the miserable conditions over the next few days.

Tonight will be "very wet and windy", according to Met Eireann's national forecast, with heavy downpours and rising winds as the evening wears on.

And tomorrow, things will stay grim, "as further spells of heavy rain spread northwards across the country with a continued risk of localised flooding."

Temperatures, at least, will be mild, with a high point of 9 to 12 degrees today and 11 to 14 degrees tomorrow.
