Met Eireann's snow forecast: The counties set for winter blast amidst Storm Barra

In the midst of the status red and orange weather warnings ahead of Storm Barra, Met Eireann has predicted snow for a number of counties.

The main showers are expected along the west and northern coasts as torrential conditions batter the country over the next 24-48 hours.

According to the Irish weather forecasters, showers of rain will gradually die out early tonight and it will become dry for a time with a touch of frost in places.

Later in the night southeast, winds will increase strong to gale force and gusty and outbreaks of heavy rain will develop in the southwest, rapidly moving across the country early in the morning.

The lowest temperatures of -1 to 3 degrees are expected early in the night.

Then on Tuesday, Storm Barra will bring severe and damaging wind speeds.

They will be strongest on exposed coastal areas of Munster and Connacht, while gale to storm force southeast winds will veer west and later northwest in direction.

Heavy rain will move northeastwards across the country during the morning followed by widespread "squally showers."

Falls of sleet and hill snow are likely in the north and northwest during the morning.

Meanwhile, coastal flooding is expected to bring with it some travel disruption.

Overnight on Tuesday, there will be frequent showers - some with wintry hail and isolated thunderstorms.

Wednesday will be another cold and windy day with some bright spells “but also widespread showers, some wintry in nature.”

Strong to gale force northwest winds will return but are due to die out by Wednesday night.

As for the rest of the week, no further snow showers are expected at this point, however current indications show an unsettled weekend ahead.
