Met Eireann's Joanna Donnelly says winds may reach "stronger than orange levels"

Met Eireann forecaster Joanna Donnelly has warned that “winds may reach stronger levels than orange levels” between 11pm and 1pm.

And head of forecasting at Met Eireann, Evelyn Cusack said there will be “several hours of very dangerous weather”, and that things will “liven up considerably during the morning”.

Speaking on RTE’s Morning Ireland, Joanna said: “We have Storm Brendan bringing extreme winds across the country today.

“We have a Status Orange warning as you should know by now in operation for all areas.

“And a Status Red for marine areas so there will be coastal flooding and I believe some roads are closed.

She added: “Now the winds may reach stronger levels than those orange levels for limited periods of time and at local levels as the heavy and convective line of rain goes through.

“We expect that line of rain to arrive on western coasts at 11pm and it should reach eastern coasts by 1pm.

“So that’s a very fast moving line of very heavy rain and that’s when the extreme winds will be felt.”

She added: “It’s a really bad weather day today so if you can avoid any journeys, do.”
