Met Eireann's freezing updated forecast as expert warns of dangerous rare phenomenon

Met Eireann are forecasting a bitterly cold night across Ireland as temperatures drop as low as -2C.

Weather chiefs expect the conditions in Ireland to turn over the next number of days but not before this freezing spell tonight.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Cold this morning, with frost clearing. Sunny spells in many areas, but scattered showers also, mainly in Connacht and west Munster. More persistent rain in Ulster, clearing eastwards this afternoon and early this evening. Showers dying out elsewhere this afternoon and becoming mostly dry. Maximum temperatures 5 to 9 degrees, in moderate to fresh northwesterly winds.

"Tonight will be mainly dry, with clear spells, but cold, with frost. Minimum temperatures minus 2 to plus 2 degrees. Light to moderate westerly winds will back southerly, freshening along west and southwest coasts by morning, with increasing cloud."

And Met Eireann expert Joanna Donnelly has warned motorists about a rare phenomenon that is leading to more crashes.

On Twitter, Joanna said the event is a "very rare phenomenon in Ireland and very very dangerous on the roads.

"If you're on the roads this morning take extra care and allow lots of time and room for vulnerable users," she added.

Luckily, it is set to become less cold from tomorrow with no freezing nights expected.

A Met Eireann forecaster added: "Tomorrow morning will be mainly dry at first, with frost clearing quickly. Rain will extend from the Atlantic across Munster and Connacht during the morning, extending eastwards to all areas during the afternoon.

"Clearer conditions, with just isolated showers, will follow into the west and southwest towards evening.

"Cold in the midlands, north and east, with maximum temperatures of 3 to 7 degrees, but milder in the southwest and along the west coast, with afternoon temperatures of 7 to 11 degrees. South to southeast winds will be mostly light to moderate, but fresh to strong on southern, western and northwestern coasts."
