Met Eireann's forecast for the next 30 days predicts unusual weather for May

The poor Bank Holiday weekend of weather is a sign of things to come with a below par May forecast by Met Eireann.

Temperatures are expected to be below average for the duration of May while the level of rainfall will exceed what's usual for this time of year.

In terms of the first week of May, the unsettled conditions will persist as an active low-pressure system moves across Ireland on Monday, bringing with it a cold and unstable northwesterly airflow.

Met Eireann state that "with a zonal jet positioned south of Ireland, there is the chance of further depressions feeding in from the Atlantic later in the week."

Ultimately, this will cause next week's temperatures to be below average, while rainfall amounts move above average for this time of year.

The dominant weather conditions will be rainfall on Monday with potential onshore gales bringing a risk of spot flooding. Frosts are also likely to develop during some of next week's nights and there’s the potential for thunderstorm activity too.

The second week of May will see more settled conditions with high pressure dominating.

At present, temperatures are set to be below average but they'll be higher than the previous week.

As for rainfall, the amounts are expected to be below average for much of the country but more normal amounts will fall in northern areas.

The main risky conditions for the second week of May include a slight risk of frosts at night and the possibility of fog forming at night.

The penultimate week of May "shows a weaker signal for high pressure to the southwest feeding in a northwesterly airflow but temperatures returning to around average for the time of year."

The northwestern areas of Ireland will experience some showers and above-average rainfall amounts.

Elsewhere, it's set to be drier than average conditions, mainly in the southeast.

To conclude May, the final week of the month is expected to feature more unsettled conditions with a mainly southwesterly airflow.

Rain and showers will likely move in from the Atlantic at times with western and southwestern areas possibly receiving above-average rainfall.

As for the rest of the country, temperatures will likely be around average.
