Met Eireann's five-day forecast as Ireland set for more snow and freezing weather

Despite the fact that we're in a new year, the weather is showing no signs of changing its course because the first few days of 2021 are very similar to those that ended 2020.

At present, there's a status yellow ice warning for Antrim, Armagh, Down, and Derry. The UK Met Office warn that icy stretches are likely to cause difficult travel conditions in those four counties.

That particular warning is valid from 4pm on Monday, December 4 until 11am on Tuesday, 5 December.

As for the other counties, this week will see the mercury dropping to as low as -3 with frosty and icy conditions expected.

Monday night is set to be a cold one with clear spells, widespread frost and ice in many areas. The frost has been defined as "severe" by Met Eireann as temperatures fall to between -3 and +1 degrees, colder locally in Connacht and Ulster.

Most areas will dry, but showers of rain, hail, sleet or snow will continue to affect parts of Leinster and Munster.

The chilly conditions will continue into Tuesday morning with the frost and ice clearing very slowly and persisting in some areas. As for the majority of the country, it's set to be dry with sunny spells.

There's some bad news for those living in Leinster and east Munster because wintry showers of rain, hail, sleet and snow are expected.

Tuesday night will be cold with a widespread sharp or severe frost and ice in many areas. Most areas will be dry with clear spells.

However, scattered wintry showers of hail, sleet or snow will affect the eastern half of Leinster. Again, stay warm because lowest temperatures of -3 to +2 degrees are tipped.

Wednesday will continue to be cold with sunny spells. The frost and ice will clear slowly but linger in some areas.

Wednesday night will see the rain will develop in the northwest and these wet conditions will spread southeastward, falling as sleet or snow in some areas. Lowest temperatures of -2 to +2 degrees with frost and icy patches in many areas.

On Thursday morning, the rain, sleet and snow will continue to move southwards, where it's expected to clear in the afternoon with sunny spells. Sadly, some wintry showers are expected in Ulster and Connacht.

Yet again, Thursday night will be cold and mainly dry with clear spells. However, there's also a widespread severe frost and icy patches.

As the weekend approaches, Friday is shaping up to be cold and mainly dry with sunny spells. Once again, the widespread severe frost will be prevalent but the weekend is shaping up to be mainly dry.

There will be some patchy rain or drizzle at times, but it's set to be warmer with daytime temperatures of 3 to 7 degrees on Saturday and 4 to 8 degrees on Sunday. Thankfully, the frost will be less widespread and less severe.
