Met Eireann's five day-forecast as hottest period of the summer arrives in Ireland

Weather conditions are set to improve over the coming days as the sunshine and warm temperatures make a welcome return.

It's set to be mainly dry with only patches of drizzle. Conditions will continue to improve as the week develops with daytime temperatures reaching as high as 26 degrees.

Here's how the next five days are shaping up...

Monday

A dull and misty start to the week counties in the east experiencing some light outbreaks of rain and drizzle.

Thankfully, the sun will emerge in the afternoon but lingering showers are expected to turn heavy at times, mainly over the eastern half of the country.

Due to this rainfall, there's a risk of isolated thunderstorms and spot flooding. Highest temperatures of 18 to 21 or 22 degrees.

Monday night

Those heavy showers over the eastern half of the country are expected to fade away as conditions become dry apart from a few isolated showers.

Elsewhere, there's set to clear spells but cloud cover will increase from the west during the night. Lowest temperatures of 10 to 14 degrees.

Tuesday morning and afternoon

The morning will be dry and cloudy but some patchy drizzle will affect northern and western coastal counties at times, occasionally falling further east too.

The south and east will see the best of the sunshine but thankfully, temperatures will increase around the country as the day develops. Highest temperatures of 17 to 21 degrees generally, reaching 22 or 23 degrees in parts of the south and east.

Tuesday night

A dry start with clear spells, however, patchy drizzle will move in from the Atlantic during the night along with thickening cloud. Lowest temperatures of 10 to 14 degrees.

Wednesday morning and afternoon

The day will start with a mix of cloud and sunny spells. Patchy drizzle will continue to affect northern and western coastal counties at times but it's set to be dry elsewhere. Highest temperatures of 18 to 23 degrees generally, but colder on the west coast.

Wednesday night

Met Eireann has said that we can expect: "A muggy night with patchy drizzle extending further eastwards. Lowest temperatures of 13 to 16 degrees."

Thursday morning and afternoon

As the weekend approaches, a warm, dry and sunny day is on the horizon.

Patchy drizzle will continue along Atlantic coasts and over Ulster but the mercury is set to peak between 18 to 23 degrees, coolest in Atlantic coastal counties and warmest in the south and southeast.

Thursday night

Some overnight mist and coastal fog will develop but for the most part, it's set to be dry with clear spells. Lowest temperatures of 13 to 16 degrees over Leinster and east Munster, 10 to 14 degrees elsewhere.

Friday

Met Eireann has said to expect: "Another warm day with sunny spells, though cloud will bubble up in the afternoon and drizzle will mainly affect coastal areas. Highest temperatures of 20 to 25 degrees, warmest in the southwest, in light variable breezes.

Renowned weather expert Alan O'Reilly of Carlow Weather is a bit more optimistic for Friday though because he expects the mercury to reach 26 degrees.

"Great cross model agreement now on high pressure moving up over Ireland by Friday. It may not be clear blue skies but it will be dry and warmer so if the weather is getting you down today remember it will get better. Finer details this far out can change but Friday could be a cracking day with up to 26c and good sunshine," he said.
