Met Eireann's brutal end of year prediction with flooding and heavy rain

Ireland is set to be battered by heavy rain as the nation says goodbye to another turbulent year.

Met Eireann is predicting a very wet few days, with a weather advisory in place for "heavy spells" and local flooding in parts of the country.

Wednesday will remain dry for most of the afternoon, but rain will become widespread throughout the evening and continue overnight. Temperatures will vary between 10C and 13C.

Thursday morning will be mostly cloudy and mainly dry, but again, showers will return during the afternoon and spread northwards throughout the day. This spell will become heavy with localised flooding expected. Temperatures will remain between 11C and 13C. Persistent rain will remain overnight.

Friday, New Years Eve, will see rain clear northwards and will remain quite dry and mild, with highs of 15C. However, another band of heavy rain will emerge across the country that night.

Saturday, New Years Day, will see more persistent showers throughout the morning and afternoon. But temperatures will remain mild, reaching levels of 14C.

Sunday will be a brighter day compared to the rest of the week, but will see scattered showers along with temperatures of 11C.

Here's the five-day forecast from Met Eireann in full:

Wednesday:

Remaining rain in the north will continue to clear northeastwards giving way to drier and brighter conditions with just scattered patches of drizzle and sunny spells developing. Mild and blustery, especially this morning, with fresh to strong and gusty west winds and afternoon temperatures of 10C to 13C.

This evening, rain and drizzle will develop in the south and will spread northwards early tonight, becoming widespread. The rain and drizzle will continue overnight, but will become light and patchy. Lowest temperatures of 7C to 11C with moderate southerly winds, fresher along the south coast.

Thursday:

Thursday morning will be mostly cloudy and mainly dry. Rain will develop in the south towards noon and will spread northwards through the afternoon and evening, heavy at times with localised flooding possible. Highest temperatures of 11C to 13C with light to moderate southerly breezes, which will strengthen in the south later.

Friday:

On Friday morning (New Years Eve), rain will clear northwards and the rest of the day will be mild and mainly dry with highest temperatures of 12C to 15C and light southerly breezes. On New year's eve night another band of rain will spread northeastwards across the country. Lowest temperatures of 9C to 11C with fresh southerly winds, strong in some coastal areas.

Saturday:

On Saturday (New Year's Day) rain and drizzle will continue through the morning and will give way to some showers in the afternoon. A very mild start to 2022 with highest temperatures of 12C to 14C and moderate to fresh south to southwest winds. On Saturday night, there is a possibility of heavy rain for a time in the south and southeast of the country.

Sunday:

Sunday will be a brighter day with sunshine and scattered showers. Highest temperatures of 9C to 11C with moderate southwest winds, fresher in coastal areas.
