Met Eireann releases images of where significant snow will fall in the next two days

Met Eireann has revealed where significant snow showers will occur in Ireland over the next 24 hours with accumulations of up to five centimetres set to fall in some areas.

The national forecaster has shared a detailed breakdown of its weather forecast by time and location, revealing the counties which are set to be most affected by the snow showers.

An animated graphic from the forecaster reveals a band of rain, sleet and snow will gradually push northeast across Munster, Connacht and Leinster on Thursday, with further spells of snow predicted on Friday.

The image covers the period from this morning to midnight on Friday, with white and green colours indicating snowfall while blue, yellow and wine indicating rain.

According to Met Eireann's graphic, the heaviest snow fall will occur over high ground in Munster and south Leinster on Thursday evening.

Met Eireann has issued two Status Yellow warnings for snow, ice and gale-force winds as "hazardous" conditions hit Ireland.

The weather alerts are in place for Connacht, Munster and Leinster from 8am Thursday until 8am on Friday.

The first warning reads: "A band of sleet and snow spreading northeastwards during Thursday giving snow accumulations of up to 5cm in some areas (higher over the mountains), but transitioning to rain in the west and south on Thursday night."

The second alert warns that "strong to gale force southeast winds in conjunction with rain, sleet and snow will lead to poor visibility and hazardous conditions."

Meanwhile, weather experts are predicting that Ulster will see any wintry showers die out with a drier day expected in the northeast of the country.

A further spell of sleet or snow will arrive in Leinster tomorrow morning, before a band of rain moves across the west of the country.
