Met Eireann predicts horrible weekend with thunderstorms, heavy rain and flooding - and there's no end in sight

Ireland is set for a miserable weekend, with heavy rain, thunderstorms and flooding to batter the country.

And there doesn't seem to be an end in sight for the grim conditions, with Met Eireann predicting they will last until at least Wednesday.

Despite a nice morning, the horrible band of weather will arrive tonight.

A forecaster said: "Most areas will be dry today with bright spells of winter sunshine and just well scattered showers, mainly across west and northwest counties.

"However, cloud and rain will arrive into the far southwest later this evening. Highest temperatures will range a seasonal 6C to 10C degrees, in light to moderate west to southwest winds.

"Cold early tonight with frost setting in under clear skies. Whilst it will become milder, turning wet and rather windy too, as a band of thundery rain continues to move up from the southwest with fresh to strong southeast winds developing.

"Some clearer spells in in the south and west for time later. Lowest temperatures will range 0C to 5C, coldest across the north and east.

"Further pulses of heavy and sometimes thundery rain advancing from the southwest early on Sunday with spot flooding."

They added: "Some bright or sunny spells later but occasional showers too, especially across southern and western coastal counties.

"Humid and breezy, in fresh and gusty southerly winds. Highest temperatures will range 8C to 12C, best values further south.

"Blustery showers, or longer spells of rain overnight on Sunday, in moderate to fresh and gusty southerly winds. Lowest temperatures of 5C to 8C."

Sadly, this shocking spell of weather will continue into next week.

Met Eireann's five day forecast warns of "unsettled with sometimes wet and windy spells."

The forecaster said: "Monday will be breezy with a mix of sunny spells and scattered showers, frequent and sometimes heavy across southern and western counties.

"Most areas will be dry with light southerly winds and sunny spells on Tuesday - though scattered showers will affect southern and western counties.

"Later in the day, cloud will thicken across Munster with heavy rain moving into the far southwest towards evening, along with freshening southeast winds.

"Possible high winds to begin with overnight rain clearing on Wednesday morning. Sunny spells and scattered showers soon following."
