Met Eireann has forecast a return of rain to some areas as this week comes to a close, while warnings remain in place for Munster and Leinster.
Today’s weather alert is due to “fog or freezing fog that developed overnight on Wednesday, could become dense in parts of Munster and Leinster overnight leading to impaired visibility and hazardous driving conditions.
“On Thursday fog will be slow to lift and may linger locally beyond the warning period.”
The warning will remain in place until 12:00 pm today.
As for today’s general forecast, fog and low clouds will persist in parts of the south and southeast through much of the day.
“Elsewhere it will be a mainly dry day with a mix of cloud and sunny spells, and with some patchy drizzle possible in the west and northwest.”
Highest temperatures will range from 5 to 10 degrees and it may be colder where the fog persists in light southerly or variable breezes.
Heading into Friday morning, “areas of mist and fog will be slow to clear once again through Friday morning, and they could linger for much of the day in some eastern and northern parts of the country," the forecasters explain.
However, it will be another largely dry day with a mix of cloud and sunny breaks and just the odd coastal shower.
Highest temperatures will range from 5 to 9 degrees generally but it will be a few degrees colder where mist and fog persist, in light southeasterly or variable breezes.
On Saturday, fog will clear quicker than on other mornings leaving another mostly dry day nationwide. It will be cloudier with patchy light rain and drizzle in places.
Highest temperatures of 5 to 10 degrees are expected with light southerly breezes. Most places will start dry on Saturday night with variable cloud and some clear spells.
Light rain and drizzle will spread eastwards across the country overnight on Saturday, and lowest temperatures will range from 0 to 5 degrees with mist and fog patches developing.
Any of the overnight showers in the east and southeast will clear away on Sunday morning with brighter, clearer conditions and sunny spells spreading from the west.
“A few spots of drizzle will still occur during cloudier periods and there is a chance of more widespread patchy light rain and drizzle developing over the southern half of the country on Sunday afternoon. Highest temperatures of 7 to 10 degrees.”
