Met Eireann issues weather warning for three counties with high winds expected

Met Eireann has issued a weather warning for three counties this morning.

Forecasters say Donegal, Galway and Mayo can expect high winds and a risk of 'wave overtopping' from 1pm this afternoon until 6pm this evening.

The full Status Yellow warning, issued at 9.32am this morning, reads: "Southwest winds this afternoon will reach mean speeds of 45 to 60 km/h with gusts of up to 100km/h.

"Onshore winds will bring a risk of wave overtopping."

Meanwhile, two marine warnings have been in place since earlier this morning.

The Status Yellow gale warning reads: "Southwest winds will reach gale force today (Sunday) and for a time tonight, on Irish coastal waters from Mizen Head to Slyne Head to Malin Head and on the Irish Sea."

While the small craft warning reads: "Southwest winds will reach force 6 or higher today ( Sunday) and tonight on Irish coasts from Malin Head to Howth Head to Mizen Head."

Met Eireann's national forecast for today says it will be "cloudy with further outbreaks of rain".

It adds: "Rain will become fairly widespread across the country again in the afternoon, heavy at times especially in western counties with a risk of localised flooding.

"There will be mist and low cloud along southern and southwestern coasts.

"Highest temperatures of 11 to 15 degrees with southwest winds increasing fresh to strong and gusty, reaching near gale to gale force and gusty in western and northwestern coastal parts.

"Continuing cloudy and windy tonight with further outbreaks of rain, heavy and persistent for a time across the northern half of the country, but gradually becoming lighter overnight.

"The most persistent rain and drizzle will gradually become confined to parts of Ulster and north Connacht later in the night with just patchy drizzle elsewhere.

"It will be misty with low cloud in some western and southern coastal parts.

"A very mild night with lowest temperatures of 10 to 12 degrees in fresh to strong and gusty southwest winds, reaching near gale force and gusty in some western and northwestern coastal parts."
