Met Eireann issues weather warning for 10 counties as snow and freezing temperatures hit

Met Eireann has issued a status yellow low temperature warning for 10 counties ahead of a freezing cold night.

The warning for all of Connacht, Cavan, Monaghan, Donegal, Longford and Clare comes into effect at 6pm this evening and will last until 10am on Wednesday.

Met Eireann say on their website: "Very cold tonight with temperatures falling to between -2 and -5 degrees, possibly colder locally, with a widespread severe frost. Icy patches may form on untreated surfaces. Freezing temperatures will persist well into the day on Wednesday."

Some parts of the country will also see snow tonight as all of Ireland is engulfed by freezing conditions.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Very cold tonight with widespread severe frost and ice. It will be dry with clear spells in many areas, however scattered wintry showers of hail, sleet or snow will continue to affect eastern and southeastern counties.

"Lowest temperatures of -1 to -5 degrees, coldest in Connacht and Ulster where temperatures may fall even lower locally. Some freezing fog patches may form in the light northerly or variable breezes."

The Met Office in the UK have also issued a warning for ice in Antrim, Armagh, Down and Tyrone from 4pm this evening.
