A warning has been put in place for the entire country today as icy conditions move in.
The status yellow ice warning is in place nationwide until 10:00 am this morning due to “icy stretches expected on Friday morning.”
Apart from the hazardous conditions being faced today, Friday, the Irish forecaster says it will be a cold, bright, and blustery day with sunny spells and scattered showers.
Some of the showers are expected to be wintry - particularly in the west and north - with a possibility of hail and thunder.
Maximum temperatures this afternoon will range from 4 to 7 degrees “in brisk west to northwest winds.”
As nightfall arrives, showers will become isolated early tonight with frost forming in some areas as temperatures dip back to between zero and +4 degrees.
However, cloud cover will increase from the west overnight and temperatures will rise.
Meanwhile, outbreaks of rain which will be heavy at times will then develop in the west and north of the country.
Saturday will be a rather cloudy and wet day with outbreaks of rain - which is expected to be most persistent in the west and north of the country.
The best of any dry or bright interludes in the east and south, while maximum temperatures will range from 8 to 11 degrees with strong west or southwest winds.
Those living in exposed coastal areas are also warned of gale-force winds.
On Saturday night, outbreaks of rain will continue overnight, but will gradually push south over the country allowing colder and showery conditions to move in across northern counties.
There will be quite a contrast in overnight temperatures from north to south ranging from 2 or 3 degrees in Ulster to 9 or 10 degrees along the south coast.
To close out the week then, Sunday looks set to be a chilly and blustery day with widespread showers and some sunny spells.
A few hail or sleet showers will occur over hills in the north and the highest temperatures will be between 6 and 9 degrees in fresh westerly winds.
A few showers are also expected early on Sunday night along with rather chilly conditions - hitting lows of 1 to 4 degrees.
However, cloudier and milder conditions with scattered outbreaks of rain will move across the country later in the night.
