Met Eireann issues updated weather warning for three counties with freezing cold night ahead

Met Eireann has this morning issued a new weather warning for three counties with high winds set to hit on Wednesday night.

The national forecaster is warning that Wexford, Waterford and Wicklow will all get gusts of up to 100km/h through the night.

The status yellow warning will begin at 11pm and be in place until 5am on Thursday.

It reads: "Southerly winds tonight will reach mean speeds of 50 to 60km/h with gusts of 80 to 100km/h, highest in coastal areas. Where winds are onshore there is a risk of coastal flooding around high tide."

And while other counties have not yet been warned, freezing cold conditions and high winds are expected nationwide.

The national forecaster added: "Heavy rain will move up from the south tonight, bringing a risk of spot flooding. The rain will turn to sleet, mainly over the western half of the country overnight, falling as snow on high ground.

"Lowest temperatures of -1 to +3 degrees. Southerly winds veering westerly will increase strong to near gale and gusty in eastern counties overnight, with gales developing along southern and Irish Sea coasts.

"Scattered showers, with hail and a risk of isolated thunderstorms will feed into western counties towards dawn."
