Met Eireann issues updated status yellow warning for five counties

With a period of unsettled weather set to hit Ireland, Met Eireann has issued a status yellow rainfall alert for Galway, Mayo, Cork, Kerry and Waterford.

Flooding is expected to impact parts of the country as Ireland gets drenched by heavy rain, the national forecaster has said.

Up to 50mm of rain is expected to fall in parts, with localised flooding set to hit in another blow to the south and west.

The updated weather warning was issued at 09.40 am and it takes effect from 6pm this evening until 6pm on Wednesday afternoon.

Met Eireann states: "Through Tuesday night and Wednesday, 30 to 50 mm of rain with higher amounts in mountainous areas. Flooding in places. Reduced visibility and hazardous driving conditions."

As for the general forecast, rain is expected countrywide tonight. There's set to be some heavy falls, which will bring a risk of localised spot flooding.

Wednesday is set to be a wet and windy day with the of localised spot flooding continuing in some places. Strong and gusty southerly winds are expected to move westerly as the conditions improve later in the day.

A forecaster has said that the next few days could see a period of "unsettled conditions right out to the weekend" with rainfall expected in parts of the country on Thursday and Friday too.

Those living in the west and northwest are set to receive the worst of the weather as the week draws on because blustery and scattered showers are expected in the area with a risk of hail and possible isolated thunderstorms

Sadly, these wet and dreary conditions look like they're here to stay for the weekend too.

The forecast states that it will be "unsettled over the weekend with rain expected on Saturday and showers for Sunday."
