Met Eireann issues two new warnings for Ireland with more heavy snow and freezing temperatures

Met Eireann has this morning issued two new weather warnings as Ireland's cold snap continues for another 24 hours.

The forecaster's original snow and ice warning for the entire country was due to end at midday - but a new warning has now been issued until 7pm tonight.

It states: "Scattered falls of sleet, snow and hail continuing for the rest of today. Icy and hazardous conditions."

A second yellow low temperature warning has been issued with the mercury dropping as low as -5C in some places and potentially even lower.

This warning takes effect at 7pm tonight and will be in place until 10am tomorrow morning.

A Met Eireann forecaster added: "Scattered sleet, snow and rain showers will continue through the day with some accumulations and icy conditions. Wintry showers will become mainly confined to Leinster by evening with sunny spells and isolated showers elsewhere.

"Bitterly cold with highest afternoon temperatures of just 1 to 4 degrees Celsius, in light to moderate northwest breezes.

"Most areas will be dry tonight with just isolated wintry showers. However, wintry rain will move into the far northwest later.

"A widespread sharp to severe frost will set in, along with icy stretches. Some freezing fog too, especially across the northeast and east. Lowest temperatures of -2 to -5 degrees Celsius. Light to moderate westerly winds will back southwesterly overnight."
