Met Eireann issues Status Orange wind warning after heavy snow across Ireland

Massive 110km/h winds will batter Ireland on Sunday after Met Eireann issued an Orange weather warning.

The alert will be in force from 12pm to 4pm, mainly affecting Donegal, Galway and Mayo.

It comes on top of the previously issued Yellow warning for Dublin, Louth, Wexford, Wicklow, Meath, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Sligo, Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick and Waterford.

This caution will be in place from 5am to 5pm, while another for Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Offaly, Westmeath, Cavan, Monaghan, Roscommon and Tipperary is valid from 6am to 4pm.

It follows on from a miserable Friday and Saturday which saw snowfall and high winds nationwide.

Speaking about conditions on Sunday, a Met Eireann forecaster said: "Cloudy, wet and very windy on Sunday with strong to gale force and gusty southerly winds, and severe gusts for a time in the afternoon in some western and northwestern coastal areas.

"The rain will be heavy at times with a risk of flooding, especially across southern counties.

"Drier and brighter conditions will extend from the west later in the day, with winds moderating then too. Highest temperatures of 10 to 13 degrees.

"Becoming drier early in the night with moderating southerly winds.

"However, outbreaks of rain will push into southern and western counties towards morning. Frost free with lowest temperatures of 5 to 9 degrees."

Next week doesn't look much better, with the national forecaster predicting that strong winds and heavy rain will continue in the coming days.
