Storm Atiyah: Met Eireann issues Status Orange weather warning for eight counties as strong winds set to batter Ireland

Met Eireann has issued a Status Orange wind warning for eight counties as Storm Atiyah is set to batter parts of the country over the weekend.

The alert will come into effect this Sunday with gale force winds and a strong possibility of flooding predicted.

The national forecaster has warned of southwesterly winds which will later veer northwesterly and reach speeds of 65 to 80 km/h with gusts from 110 to 130km/h.

The orange warning is in place for Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Sligo, Clare, Kerry and Limerick and will begin at 9am on Sunday.

It will be valid until 6am on Monday morning.

Met Eireann today said: "Storm Atiyah will track between Iceland and Ireland on Sunday generating a swathe of very strong winds across the country.

"Due to a combination of high seas and storm surge there is a possibility of coastal flooding."

A Status Yellow wind warning in place yesterday for Donegal and Mayo has since been lifted, although a yellow small craft marine warning notes that "southwest to west winds will reach force 6 or higher on all Irish coasts today".
