Met Eireann issues new eight-hour weather warning for three counties only as stormy conditions hit

Met Eireann has this morning issued a fresh weather warning for three counties in the west of the country ahead of high winds.

Galway, Mayo and Donegal will all come under the yellow wind warning from midnight tonight until 8am on Wednesday morning.

The alert reads: "Southwesterly winds tonight will reach mean speeds of 50 to 65km/h and gusts of 80 to 100km/h, highest in coastal areas. Where winds are onshore there is a risk of coastal flooding around high tide."

No further weather warnings have been issued at the moment although the national forecaster is expecting some windy weather in many spots.

A forecaster added: "Early tonight, rain will move in from the southwest and will spread northeastwards across the country as winds increasing fresh to strong and gusty, strongest in the west and northwest.

"The rain will be heavy at times, and will clear overnight with showers following from the west. Lowest temperatures of 2 to 6 degrees.

"Wednesday will be bright and breezy with sunny spells and scattered showers. Highest temperatures of 7 to 10 degrees with fresh, gusty south to south west winds. In the evening, heavy rain will develop in the southwest and spread northeastwards."
