Met Eireann issues new 19-hour weather warning for Ireland as incredibly cold temperatures hit

Met Eireann has issued a low temperature warning for the entire country with lows of -7C expected overnight.

The national forecaster's warning begins at 5pm this evening and will be in effect until midday on Saturday.

The warning states: "Hazardous icy conditions in places with a widespread severe frost and pockets of freezing fog.

"Improving conditions in the west and northwest from early Saturday morning."

Motorists in particular are asked to watch out for hazardous road conditions tonight and on Saturday morning.

Parts of Leinster and Munster could even see temperatures dip to -7C tonight with some snowfall a possibility.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Widespread frost and ice this morning. Overall it will be dry day with bright winter sunshine, however well scattered wintry showers will occur too, with Ulster and east Leinster most at risk.

"Highest temperatures of only 1 to 5 degrees, in mostly light to moderate northerly breezes. A severe frost will set in quickly after dark.

"Extremely cold tonight with widespread frost and ice. Lowest temperatures of -1 to -7 degrees, coldest in Leinster and Munster. Dry and clear in many areas, however some wintry showers will affect the east of Leinster. Mist with some freezing fog will develop in light variable breezes, near calm at times."
