Met Eireann issues new 17-hour weather warning for five counties as Storm Bella rages on

Met Eireann has issued a new weather warning for five counties as Storm Bella's winds linger on.

A warning for seven counties had been due to expire at 2pm but the forecaster has issued a new updated warning this afternoon.

Donegal, Galway, Mayo, Sligo and Kerry are all under the status yellow wind alert and will remain so until 7am on Tuesday morning.

The alert states: "Today and tonight northwesterly winds will reach mean speeds of 50 to 65km/h with gusts of 90 to 110km/h, strongest on coasts."

Winds will remain high in all other parts of the country but not at a level that an official warning is deemed necessary.

Elsewhere it is expected to be a freezing end to 2020 with snow forecast in places.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: " It will be a cold end to 2020 with frosty nights.

"There will be some wintry showers with the risk of more persistent rain, sleet or snow for a time overnight Tuesday and early Wednesday."
