Met Eireann issues immediate weather warning for six counties with Storm Evert set to 'clip' Ireland

Met Eireann has issued a status yellow warning for six counties as thundery conditions are set to hit.

A status yellow rainfall alert is in place for for Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford, Wicklow, Cork, Waterford and will take immediate effect.

The alert will remain in place until 5am on Friday morning with Met Eireann warning that heavy or thundery showery rain will likely with the risk of localised flooding.

Meanwhile a status yellow marine warning also remains in place from Carnsore Point to Dungarvan to Mizen Head with forecasters warning North to northeast winds will reach gale or strong gale force at times.

It comes as Met Eireann said that Storm Evert will 'clip some southern counties' this evening but the worst of the conditions will be experienced in the UK.

On Thursday morning, the UK Met Office named Storm Evert and the low-pressure system will track to the south of Ireland before moving across the southern half of the UK tonight and tomorrow.

In a statement released to the Irish Mirror, a Met Eireann spokesperson said: "Met Office UK named Storm Evert earlier today, the low-pressure system will track to the south of Ireland before moving across the southern half of the UK tonight and tomorrow bringing strong winds and heavy rain to S Wales & S England – so the worst of the weather will be experienced in the UK.

"The northern edge of Storm Evert will clip some southern counties, bringing a spell of breezier conditions and heavy rain this evening and tonight – warnings issued for Cork, Waterford & Wexford."
