Met Eireann issues immediate weather warning as polar conditions forecast to arrive across country

Met Eireann has issued an immediate weather warning for the entirety of Ireland as bitter conditions are set to arrive this evening.

Tuesday never really had a chance of becoming warm, with temperatures struggling to get past 5C across the country.

And as the sun sets, things are only going to get colder - with the immediate status yellow weather warning being imposed by the national forecaster for low temperatures and ice - down to -3C "in many areas".

The warning kicks in from 7pm on Tuesday and lasts all the way through until 10am on Wednesday morning.

It's in place for the entire island and reads: "Tonight and Wednesday morning, widespread sharp frost with icy stretches and lowest temperatures of -3 degrees in many areas may lead to some travel disruption."

And that cold snap is set to stick around for a while.

Wednesday will see temperatures max out at 7C before things get "windier early on Wednesday night. Rain will spread from the west overnight to all areas, briefly falling as sleet on higher ground. Cold with frost forming early in the night over the eastern half of the country, in lows of -3 to +2 degrees."

Though it won't be as cold on Thursday, the weather gods will send thunderstorms down around the island.

Met Eireann predicts a "wet and windy" start to Thursday.

"Showers will become increasingly heavy with a risk of thunderstorms. It will remain quite windy for the day with fresh to strong and gusty southwest winds, with onshore gales on Atlantic coasts. Highest afternoon temperatures of 5 to 8 degrees." the forecast reads.
