Met Eireann issues immediate thunderstorm warning as Ireland set to be battered over wet weekend

Met Eireann has issued another status yellow weather warning as the majority of the country will see horrific conditions on a wet and windy weekend.

Following on from a rain alert for Friday which was issued on Thursday afternoon for Kerry, Mayo and Galway, the eastern half of the country is set to be in danger of rain and thunder on Saturday.

There will even be a flood risk.

The caution, issued on Friday morning by Met Eireann experts, says that "scattered heavy showers with localised thundery downpours will give a risk of spot flooding for the entirety of Leinster, Cavan, Donegal, Monaghan as well as all of Northern Ireland".

The rain and thunder warning is in place from 12pm on Saturday until 8pm that night.

While the brutal conditions are set to continue right into the weekend, Met Eireann has said that conditions are set to drastically improve by next week with drier weather expected.

A forecaster said: "Cloudy, murky and wet today with outbreaks of rain becoming widespread through the morning hours.

"Rain will be heavy and possibly thundery in places, especially in western parts, with a risk of localised flooding. Highest temperatures of 17 to 20 degrees in mostly moderate southerly winds, fresh on northern, eastern and southern coasts.

"The rain will start to clear the west and southwest from later in the afternoon where it will brighten up with lighter winds. However, it will remain breezy with rain elsewhere.

"Becoming dry in many places for a time tonight with quite widespread misty conditions and some fog setting in. However, a spell of heavy rain will move into the southeast overnight, with heavy showers developing in the southwest and west towards morning.

"Dull tomorrow to begin with rain lingering in eastern counties through the morning. Heavy showers and sunny spells in the west and southwest will spread eastwards through the day, with heavy or thundery showers breaking out in the east and north from late afternoon.

"Localised downpours bring a risk of spot flooding. Highest temperatures of 17 to 20 degrees. Light southerly winds will become westerly later in the day.

"Any mist or fog will quickly clear in the morning on Sunday. Scattered showers will develop but they will be much lighter compared to Saturday, with a good deal of dry weather throughout the day."
