Met Eireann issues immediate 24-hour snow warning to six counties with up to 5cm forecast

Met Eireann has issued a snow and ice warning to six Irish counties.

Dublin, Kildare, Louth, Wicklow, Meath and Monaghan could face up to 5cm of snow in places, the national forecaster has said in a 24-hour yellow warning.

The warning – which comes into place from 6pm tonight and lasts until 6pm tomorrow – states that snow accumulations of between two and five centimetres are possible.

The advisory comes on top of an existing warning issued yesterday to Antrim, Armagh, Down and Tyrone, which warned of "snow showers and icy stretches" over parts of the island.

Ireland is currently in the grips of yet another cold snap, with freezing conditions having engulfed the county on several occasions already in 2021.

Met Eireann last week issued a four-day weather advisory to the whole country, which is in place from yesterday until Wednesday.

As part of the bulletin, forecasters warned that temperatures could fall below freezing even during the day, adding that significant snowfall was possible at times.

Met Eireann's current forecast for the rest of today reads: "Tonight will be very cold with further scattered wintry showers. Further snow accumulations in places.

East and northeast counties are likely to see most of the wintry showers.

Lowest temperatures of -3 to +1 degrees Celsius. A slight to sharp frost and icy stretches will form under clear spells.

"Brisk easterly winds will persist, strongest across southwest counties and along Irish Sea coasts."

Tomorrow, according to the forecaster, "will be another very cold and blustery day.

"Scattered showers of sleet and snow will continue with further snow accumulations in places. Highest temperatures of just 1 to 3 degrees Celsius, again with an added wind chill factor owing to fresh and gusty easterly winds."
