Met Eireann issues 50-hour snow alert with separate weather warning for two counties

Met Eireann has issued a weather advisory for the entire country ahead of snowy conditions this weekend.

The alert comes into effect at 10pm on Friday night and lasts until midnight on Sunday.

Met Eireann said in an update on their website: "Very unsettled weather this weekend with wet and windy conditions bringing a risk of localised flooding.

"Cold also, with wintry falls of snow and icy conditions."

A status yellow rainfall warning has also been issued for Wicklow and Wexford from 3am on Saturday until 3pm later in the day.

The forecaster said: "Heavy rain, turning wintry at times. Rainfall accumulations of up to 30 to 40mm, with a risk of localised flooding."

Heavier snow is expected in northerly areas with Munster singled out for having milder conditions throughout the weekend.

A Met Eireann forecaster added: "Over the weekend it will be cold with prolonged spells of rain, turning to sleet and snow at times mainly over northern parts, remaining slightly milder over Munster.

"Milder conditions will edge further north during the early days of next week however remaining unsettled with further spells of rain."
